Welcome

We're Glad You're Here.

Audition Photoshoots

Shot by Andrew Fassbender

You've made it this far in your dance career. We see you. We honor your countless hours of hard work, years of dedication, blood, sweat, and tears (not to mention the perseverance) that has brought you to this point in your training. The family support and sacrifice. The countless hours in the studio, and thousands of dollars on training...

We were dancers too, we’ve been there, we get it. And now as dance photographers, our job is to help you get you THE JOB. We will help give you the edge to make it into that audition, get the attention of a director, and truly showcase your technique. This is what we do for every dancer we work with.

The employment numbers in the dance industry are daunting (even before Covid!). The ratio of contracts to graduating dancers is extremely low. Pressing through the anxiety and discomfort of the process is worth it - we firmly believe, and see it time and again in the thousands of dancers we’ve successfully worked with, that there is a place for every dancer who is willing to go the distance.

You have only 2 seconds to tell artistic directors, in an image,
why they should consider hiring you.

Your Images MUST Go Well Beyond Showcasing Your Lines and Technique

Pre-pandemic, your materials HAD to be impeccable just to get into the auditions: pre-submissions requiring both photos and videos has now solidly become the industry standard. We believe the competition will be even more fierce this year. We want you to be fully prepared for it: physically, mentally, emotionally, and with as much confidence in every area as possible.

That's Where We Come In

No two bodies are the same. Rachel has built, over 15 years of shooting dancers, a proprietary method of photographing and coaching dancers in the photography studio. This method translates movement that works in a studio and on stage into the 2 dimensional format of a screen or print. We start off slowly, incorporating the skills you need to build shots, finding your lines for the camera from the bottom (literally) up. These adjustments needed for the camera often require a new muscle memory than what you're used to. We give you the safe space, and the time you need to build in these new body patterns so that you can comfortably let go and allow your energy, power, and poise to shine through. By the time this new way of working and muscle memory is set (usually about halfway through a shoot) the images start "popping" and the creative process becomes fun and exciting. We combine this method with sculptural lighting, designed to show off your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.

You have a lot riding on these photos, and feelings of anxiety before a photoshop are very common

"I just want to look good"

We promise you will! "Wow! I didn't know I could look like that"
is a phrase we hear daily

We don’t have a crystal ball to predict the future, but we can tell you for certain that now, more than ever, you need to stand out. Your passion, your grace, your strength, your vulnerability — all those things that make you uniquely you — needs to be captured, conveyed, and most importantly, SEEN. All in a single image. An image that sparks intrigue, that defines who you are and what you offer. You must grab their attention and hold it.

Meet Andrew

All of our audition photoshoots are shot by Andrew Fassbender. In addition to a 15 year professional career, 10 of which were spent at Tulsa Ballet, Andrew has also taught and coached ballet at the pre-professional and professional level all over the country. His vision for coaching, and working with dancers is synonymous with Rachel’s. As such, in 2016 she hand-picked and trained Andrew to be her second shooter and studio director. His attention to detail, mastery of Rachel’s proprietary methods, and ability to coach dancers on a physical, psychological, and emotional level is unparalleled. Start Off With Momentum

Your audition season will start off with momentum and power if you have materials that you are proud of. The confidence a great shoot can give is second to none in blazing the path for a successful audition season.

It’s not just our goal, but our commitment to the next generation of dancers to make sure you have what you need to boost your mindset, have an inside scoop on who you really are as a dancer, and where your truest natural capabilities land.

Scheduling Your Shoot

  • 1 While we do shoot on weekends to accommodate travel schedules, we do not recommend it if you live within a 2 hour drive of NYC.
  • 2 Yes, believe it or not, we encourage dancers to consider choosing a weekday - and yes, that means taking a day out of training and/or school/work. We get that, and we don’t take that lightly.
  • 3 A day of rest is hard-won in our society and particularly in the lives of dancers. We feel it’s absolutely necessary for dancers to safeguard their day off for recovery and peak performance during the week.
  • 1 Now that we are on your team, you will understand just how much we consider your health and well-being of utmost importance. We urge you to be constantly considering where you are investing your time and energy at each step of your career to further yourself along towards your goals.
  • 2 Photoshoots, done well, are physically and mentally draining. We are going to use up all of your energy, both cognitively and technically (and then some) in our pursuit of the best possible images for you. This is why you come to us - we know how to pull it all out of you.
  • 3 Returning to classes without a day off, without time for your muscles (including your brain) to not have rest they need to recover from a week of dancing and then a shoot, will risk your optimal performance next week. At best that’s a few days of mental frustration over not being able to perform at your peak, but at worst, we are risking injury. We prefer you to not take that risk and treat your day off as if it’s non-negotiable.
